Is AI going kill my budding career in the industry?

Generative AI can effortlessly create text (novels, poems, lyrics, rejection letters), pictures and even music in seconds. Will it kill my future career in music for media? Despite all the understandable 'angst' among my more experienced peers, I am not that scared really. To get some basic understanding of what AI can and cannot do, I subscribed to Chat GPT, so that I could create images with Dall-e 2. One first - and somewhat reassuring - insight: AI produces output without the least bit of understanding. Let's have a look at the picture of a beautiful Steinway grand piano I asked it to generate:

This steampunk 'grand' would be interesting to play... After many more iterations, the best Dall-e could come up with was the instrument below. Enjoy the interesting spacing of the white and black keys, scattered tuning pins, as marvel at the confident boasting of the AI ("showcasing the precise arrangement of the strings'). Just as with delirium after a major operation, the only one who does not know they are hallucinating is the patient:

And what about music? I asked SUNO (suno.com) to create: ‘a soundtrack for a distant dry planet where an epic battle between good and evil will soon take place. Hybrid score’. Here are the results: https://suno.com/song/80e40565-8311-47ca-8bcf-35545e2dd7be and https://suno.com/song/1ce9223f-c44d-485e-8ca3-02f8535184c1

Now, we can discuss matters of taste forever, but I found this prompt-originated music sounding unimaginative and derivative. Will clients accept this type of music? If so, for how long? A much more interesting approach to work with AI was suggested recently by composer Matties Grooten (www.manglemoose.com): feed 20-60s of your composition into the AI, and let it come up with possible variations. Perhaps one out of every 20 variations might inspire you to continue composing along that line. I tried this with a one minute cue 'main Title' cue I wrote for an imaginary TV period drama ('Books not Bricks'), and asked Suno to extend it. Here is the original: https://soundcloud.com/user-125511405/main-title-books-not-bricks?in=user-125511405/sets/music-to-picture-2&si=eeb84cacbd98428d9e550e3b58c825b1&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing, and here are the two Suno variations:

I leave it to you to judge the quality of the AI 'composer' creating these extensions. For now, I am not too worried about AI ruining my chances to become a working media composer.
